Now trust me – I know that coordinating outfits can feel overwhelming for a photoshoot, but I’ve more than enough experience in this world to tell you that it’s crucial for stunning photos, and less terrifying than you think! Let’s explore some family photo styling tips to help you plan the perfect wardrobe for your session.

I’ve always found with my clients that selecting the right color schemes and clothing styles is vital for stunning family photoshoots. The location and background play a significant role in determining the best color palette. Soft neutrals work well against bright walls, while pops of color enhance neutral backgrounds.

Earth tones are a safe choice for easier coordination among family members. Use bold colors like bright red or neon sparingly. These can be tricky to work with in photos.

Coordinate Colors Instead of Matching Outfits

Avoid having everyone wear the same color or matching outfits. This can cause individuals to blend, losing their distinct personalities. Aim for a coordinated look by selecting 2-3 complementary colors. Consider analogous or triadic color schemes for a harmonious appearance.

Use 2 solid-toned outfits for every patterned piece. Patterns like plaid or floral add visual interest. Limit patterns to one person to maintain balance in the photo.

Select Classic and Timeless Pieces

Choose classic styles to ensure your pictures don’t look dated in the future. Newer clothing tends to photograph better than older pieces. Avoid overly baggy clothing, as it can add bulk to your silhouette.

Pick 2-3 coordinating colors for your family’s outfits, with one bold color as the primary hue. Earth tones and bold colors photograph nicely year-round. Complement these with softer shades like blush, ivory, sage green, khaki, dusty blue, and warm greys.

Avoid Distracting Elements

Generally, I like to steer clear of clothing with large logos, graphics, or busy patterns that can distract from faces. Most photographers advise against using graphic tees or clothing with large logos in family portraits.

Avoid clothing with holes, patches, or logos for children. Thin stripes can create a moiré effect in photographs, so it’s best to avoid them as well!

Accessorize and Choose Appropriate Footwear

Complete each outfit with coordinating accessories and footwear to enhance the overall look. Many families find that accessories significantly improve the visual interest of their portraits.

Choose practical shoes for the session’s location. Avoid high-heeled stilettos for hiking and steer clear of athletic sneakers or bright white shoes. For winter sessions, ankle boots keep feet dry and warm.

Plan for Groupings and Individual Portraits

When coordinating multi-generational outfit coordination, consider how outfits will look in smaller groupings or individual shots. Take a cell phone picture of the selected outfits laid out together to assess color coordination.

It’s safe to say that organising outfits for a stress-free family photoshoot requires careful planning and attention to detail! Whatever you do, just make sure to select a cohesive color palette and build looks around mom’s outfit. Incorporate textures and layers to create visually appealing family portraits!

Always try and consider the location and season when planning your outfits too. Earthy tones and neutrals evoke warmth, while pastels create a soft atmosphere. Bold colors can add energy, especially in urban settings. Mix one or two dominant patterns with solid-colored garments to maintain cohesion.
