When Should You Schedule Your Baby’s First Photoshoot? A Chicago Guide

Your baby’s first photo session is best scheduled within the first 5 to 14 days after birth, when newborns are sleepiest and curl most naturally into those timeless poses. If that window has passed, beautiful alternatives include the sitting stage around six months and a first birthday cake smash at twelve months. After more than a decade photographing newborns across Chicago and the North Shore, I can promise you this: whatever stage your baby is in, there is a session that will capture it beautifully.

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting parents in Chicago and the North Shore is simple: when should we actually schedule our baby’s first photo session? The honest answer is that it depends on the look and feel you want, and on how early you reach out. Here is exactly how I guide the families who come to my Glenview studio.

When Is the Best Time for a Newborn Session?

The ideal window for a posed newborn session is between 5 and 14 days after birth. During these first two weeks, babies are physiologically sleepier, more flexible, and content to settle into the soft, curled poses that define classic newborn artistry. After about two weeks, babies begin to stretch out, wake more easily, and lose some of that brand-new curl.

There is also a practical side. Newborn sessions at my studio are never rushed. We build in plenty of unhurried time for feeding, soothing, and settling. I provide all of the wraps, props, handcrafted headbands, and backdrops, and the studio is kept warm and cozy so your baby stays comfortable throughout. All you need to bring is yourselves.

What If You Miss the Newborn Window?

If your baby is already past the two-week mark, do not worry: the sitting stage, around six months, is the next beautiful milestone for a first professional session. By then, most babies can sit up independently or with minimal support, which opens up a completely different style of portrait. You get genuine social smiles, belly laughs, curious expressions, and the very beginning of real personality shining through.

Many of the families I photograph at this stage tell me the sitting-stage portraits end up being their favorites, precisely because their baby’s character is so visible. If your baby’s first photo session happens at six months rather than six days, you have lost nothing. You have simply chosen a different chapter of the story.

Is a First Birthday Session Worth Planning Ahead?

Yes, and the twelve-month mark is one of the most joyful sessions I offer. A first birthday session typically includes both classic portraits and a cake smash, which is a fun, messy, and utterly memorable way to celebrate your baby’s first year. Watching a one-year-old explore their first cake produces some of the most entertaining and shareable images you will ever have of your child.

It is worth planning a few weeks ahead here too, especially if you would like the finished images ready in time for a birthday party or announcements. Families who book early get the most flexibility on dates.

How Far Ahead Should You Book Your Baby’s First Photos?

For newborn sessions, I recommend booking during your second trimester, ideally between weeks 20 and 28 of pregnancy. This gives us time to schedule your consultation, walk through your vision, and hold a flexible window around your due date. I intentionally limit the number of sessions I take each month so every family receives my full, unhurried attention, which means my calendar around popular due dates fills early. I cover the full booking timeline in my guide on when to book your newborn photographer.

Booking early also opens up something special: the option to pair your maternity session with your newborn session for beautiful visual continuity in your family’s story, with the same artistry and aesthetic across both chapters.

Where Will Your Baby’s First Photoshoot Take Place?

Your session can take place in my private Glenview studio or in the comfort of your own home, whichever feels right for your family. The studio, at 1005 Harlem Avenue in Glenview, is fully equipped with professional lighting, organic wraps, heirloom props, and complimentary snacks and drinks, so you can simply arrive and relax. In-home sessions capture your newborn in their natural environment, with meaningful personal touches woven into every frame.

If you are expecting, or your baby has already arrived, I would love to help you plan your baby’s first photo session.
