When to Book Your Newborn Photographer – A Guide for Expecting Chicago Parents
The ideal time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester – between weeks 20 and 28 of pregnancy. Sessions are most beautiful when baby is between 5 and 14 days old, and most experienced Chicago newborn photographers book out 2 to 3 months ahead. Waiting until after birth means risking that the earliest, most fleeting window has already passed.
After more than 13 years photographing newborns at our Glenview studio, we’ve learned that the families who book early walk away feeling the most at ease – not because they rushed, but because they gave themselves room to breathe. In those early weeks of new parenthood, breathing room is everything.
Why Is the Second Trimester the Best Time to Book?
The second trimester is the sweet spot because it gives you time to plan without the physical demands of the third trimester making everything harder. Between weeks 20 and 28, we can schedule your consultation, walk through your vision, and hold a flexible window around your due date – all before the final stretch of pregnancy takes over.
Here’s something many expecting parents don’t realize: Kristin Milito Photography intentionally limits the number of sessions we take each month. Every family deserves our full, unhurried attention – and that means our calendar fills. Popular windows, like late spring and early fall, can book out two to three months ahead. The earlier you reach out, the more choices you have.
Booking during your second trimester also opens up something special: the option to pair your newborn session with a maternity session for a beautiful visual continuity in your family’s story – the same artistry, the same aesthetic, across two of the most significant chapters of early parenthood.

Why Do the First 5 to 14 Days Matter So Much?
The first 5 to 14 days are the window when newborn photography happens most naturally and most beautifully. During this time, babies are physiologically sleepier, more flexible, and content to curl into those soft, organic poses that define fine art newborn portraiture. Their skin has that fresh, luminous quality. They haven’t yet developed the startle reflexes that make older newborns harder to settle.
We’ve photographed thousands of babies at our Glenview studio, and the difference between a 10-day-old and a 4-week-old is striking. It’s not that older newborns can’t be photographed beautifully – they absolutely can. But for those serene, wrapped, softly-lit portraits that become the heirlooms you hang on your walls for generations, the first two weeks are when the magic happens most effortlessly.
This is exactly why booking during pregnancy matters. When you reserve your spot with us, we hold a flexible window around your due date. Once baby arrives, you simply let us know, and we confirm the session day. No scrambling, no waitlists, no stress during what should be a sacred time.

What Happens After You Book?
Once your date is reserved, the preparation belongs to us – and that’s entirely by design. Our process is built to remove every possible worry from your plate during pregnancy and those first fragile weeks.
A few weeks before your due date, we send a detailed session guide covering what to expect, how to prepare, and what to bring (truthfully, almost nothing – we provide nearly everything). You’ll also receive exclusive access to our Motherhood Wardrobe – a curated collection of gowns and wraps available only to our clients, so you’ll feel radiant without needing to shop for a single thing.
On session day, we handle the lighting, the temperature, the soothing, and the posing. Our proprietary posing system adapts to your newborn’s comfort and personality. We never force a position. Safety is non-negotiable at Kristin Milito Photography – every pose, every prop, every transition is guided by years of specialized newborn handling training. Parents frequently tell us the session felt more like a serene, unhurried morning than a photoshoot. That is genuinely the goal.
Can I Still Book If I’m Already in My Third Trimester?
Yes – reach out anyway. While the second trimester gives you the most options, we always do our best to accommodate families who find us later in pregnancy, and sometimes we have availability. If baby has already arrived, contact us immediately – we may still be able to get you in during that ideal first-two-week window.
That said, waiting does carry a real risk: if our calendar is full for your due-date window, we may not be able to offer the 5-to-14-day session timing that makes our work look the way it does. For families set on the fine art newborn aesthetic, earlier genuinely matters.
Is It Worth Planning Your Baby’s Entire First Year at Once?
Many of our families choose to photograph beyond the newborn stage. Our milestone sessions capture your baby at the key developmental moments – sitting up, standing, the first birthday – creating a complete visual story of the first year that becomes a cherished heirloom record of just how fast everything changed.
Some families bundle these into a baby plan at the time of their initial booking. It’s a lovely way to ensure those fleeting stages are never missed, and it gives us the opportunity to plan every session with intention and continuity from the very beginning.
